INDULGE | Hong Kong Cityscape

Black & White photography, shooting 2019-2024 the changing Hong Kong, street photography and urban images, which not only records reality, but also records one’s own personal emotion along the journey of pandemic, wave of migration, and economic ups and downs. Compared with "collective memory", I am more interested in "personal memory". It maintains a kind of mystery in images, originating from our childhood, dreams, memories, life and death. When I look at the world of images, it is between reality and illusion. Through images, we can see a world that is broader and more real than reality.

From darkness to hope, the cover photo shows the back of a person walking to the exit of a shopping mall, which is a symbol of facing the future.

  • Prologue
  • Since Joseph Nicéphore Niépce invented the first photograph in 1822, photography and technology have been closely related. Photography technology continues to develop. The mechanics of the camera involve physics, and the presentation of images involves chemistry. These operations require a considerable degree of craftsmanship. More than 200 years later, in the 21st century, images have become highly digitized. Technology has greatly lowered the technical threshold of photographic imaging, and even the images generated by AI artificial intelligence can almost look real. Every moment today, people are taking pictures. What is the purpose of taking pictures? What is the meaning of images? When technology has replaced or simplified most of the workflow in the photography process, it is not necessarily easy to answer the above questions accurately.

Photography is a kind of record, and it is easy to fall into the conclusion that photography is just a "photo-copy" of reality, which then dominates the interpretation process..

Photography is both science and art. People may experience life and death when watching a movie. This is obviously fake, but it feels very real. An image freezes a certain moment in the eternal timeline, but a series of images can construct another dimension of time and space that extends from it. Photography is related to the real world. When I look at the world of images, it is between reality and illusion. It is full of mystery. There seems to be a story connection between the images and the flow of time, including the feelings of the photographer and the viewer, through images we can see a world that is broader and more real than reality.

The word “Indulge" today perfectly describes the behaviour of sharing images on social media. The use of the word "indulge" has no derogatory connotation. On the contrary, it represents a love for images. We should cherish this opportunity to think about the deeper meaning behind the images. The images I took are urban images from 2019-2024, from Hong Kong, which is undergoing rapid change. The creation of meaning is dynamic, not static, and it is worthy of our continuous thinking.

  • Closure
  • Compared with "collective memory", I am more interested in "personal memory". It maintains a kind of mystery in images, originating from our childhood, dreams, memories, life and death. The world of images is between reality and illusion, accompanying us on a journey from eternity to eternity. At the same time, people are afraid of the unpredictability of the future changes, indulging is an infatuation with images.

This is a new world that can be described as cognitive but unfamiliar.

Images can produce more meaning when what is recorded no longer exists, when people, objects, and things have become the past.

For modern people living in the city, I believe that images provide a way of meditation, sorting out our own chaotic thoughts. The past transitions to the present, and the present transitions to the future, allowing us to think about the meaning of time.
